“I started carving stone in 1989 and was immediately
in love with it. Mostly I use new Zealand limestone but also
harder stones such as marble, andesite and sandstone. I invent,
teach, run events and do commissions.
When left to myself I like to make landscapes, figures, vase
forms and spaces. I like simplicity and some mystery, to leave
room for the imagination. I like austerity softened, a bit
of ‘less is more’. I like to play with positive/negative between
two or three pieces, or by making a space or two in a stone;
this allows me to explore the gestalt of forms and ideas,
such as absence/presence.
I have run several symposia in a gorgeous classically not-very-manicured
rose garden, events I have relished. I have taught numerous
enthusiasts and continue to run classes. I have sold work
publicly and privately and completed various commissions.
The photos in my gallery give you an idea of what I do, but
some of my pieces just don’t translate into 2D well and are
not depicted. Do let me know what you like and don’t like
and if I can make anything for you, teach you or run an event
for you, and I will be pleased to oblige.”
